Guangdong Provincial Court Reminds of 'Borderly' Betting Crimes

A high court in mainland China's Guangdong province released a press release citing "seven classic cases" of "fighting cross-border gambling crimes" heard in a provincial court.

One of them was a ruling on an unspecified date between April 2018 and April 2020 against 12 defendants found guilty of "casino establishment" for their "role in encouraging and organizing gamblers in mainland China to play in the Sun City game room in Macau."

It was found that the Macau casino market mentioned the Suncity brand gambling junket business.

In January this year, the group's founder, Alvin Chau Check Wa, received an 18-year sentence after being charged with illegal gaming, criminal associations, fraud, and money laundering. In October, Mr. Chau was acquitted of fraud, but his sentence was upheld.

The press release issued by the 廣 Provincial High People's Court also included other criminal cases related to online gambling cases since 2014. The press release did not clarify the reason for the timing of the press release. The release, however, referred to implications drawn by the court from previous rulings.

The statement said a "criminal organization" comprising 12 defendants in the mentioned interim court case had provided 158 mainland Chinese gamblers with gaming chips worth a total of HK$130 million (about HK$16.6 million) and received a "HK$50 million" fee from them.

The ruling also noted that these defendants gambled on the outcome of the gamblers' win or lose on junk, thus earning "unfair gains" of "more than HK$300,000."
